Re-evaluating the 'CONCEPT' & an update on 'TRAINING'

Well folks... that last post was a little preemptive. After meeting with Sir Greg over Christmas in ILL I learned that the Leadville Marathon ambitions are to be postponed. Just the same, I'd like to keep it in mind as a long-term plan. In the next few years I'd like to run the LM. Instead, I've set my sights on a more local marathon - Grandmas. 26+ miles on the north shore of Lake Superior, starting and ending in Duluth (a town I'm really beginning to love). That marathon is on June 19th... so training begins... today?

An update on training: Since my Twin Cities 10 mile race, my running has been pretty lackluster. A foot injury (which I believed to be plantar facitis) kept my mileage at bay through November, and lack of ambition has kept my mileage at bay since. My one positive note has been my new Vibram Five Fingers. I got them in early November and have since worked up to five miles. They're AMAZING. I can't say enough how great I feel when I run in them. It's like the connection I get with the ground and my feet is amplified a millionfold.

I think every runner keeps their favorite runs locked in a special place in their memory. In late December I ran a few miles with Jessi in the VFFs over snow-covered roads in rural Duluth. It was unforgettable. The combination of feeling the snow crunch under my feet, enjoying the winter landscape, and being with the most beautiful runner I've ever met made it surreal.

Sometime this week I'd like to put together a serious training plan. I've got about five months to train for this endeavor and with that much time I believe I can put forth a really amazing effort.

Keep looking for updates... if you don't see them, hope that it's because I'm too busy pounding the pavement.

The Concept

I want to run the Leadville Trail Marathon.

Is that crazy? Yes. Improbable? Absolutely. Foolish? I think so.

Then why?

That's the subject of this blog - the story of one flatlander (me) and my pursuit of running one of the most badass marathons in the US. Thank you for reading.

ps. In case you were wondering...

"It's a term that all mountain people use to describe tourist that don't have the skills/knowledge to recreate in the mountains.
The search and rescue team spent all week trying to find the flatlanders that tried to bag the fourteener with half a liter of water and a candy bar.

Did you see the flatlander try and make it down the bumps? It was histerical."
